Abutilons - Brazillian Bell Flower and White Chinese Lantern

Brazillian Bell flower - Abutilon megapotamicum
An attractive shrub or trailing plant with pendulous, bell shaped red and yellow flowers over green foliage.  Ideal for hanging baskets, informas hedges or as a groundcover.  Thrives in a full sun to part shade position in rich well drained soil.  Keep moist in warm weather and prune after flowering to maintain compact growth.

Common name is Brazilian Bell Flower Botanical name is Abutilon megapotamicum
This ornamental viny shrub produces bell shaped flowers which are beautifully coloured.  The trailing abutilon has bi-coloured lanterns.  They are a good addition to any garden as they provideflowers almost throughout the year.
Plant grows to a height of 1.5 to  2.5 M and about 2M Wide, Stems are narrow, delicate and arching.  The plant has bright green foliage and the leaves are 5 to 8 cm long
The leaves have shallow lobes, which resemble the maple leaves.  Flowers are buttery yellow with five petals and have bright red calyces.  Yellow coloured stamens emerge from the protruding central column which is red in colour.

Can be grown in containers or in hanging pots, urns or baskets.
Maintenance
Deadheading the plant is necessary to increase the longevity of the plants and to prevent seeding.  Prune the tips after flowering.  You can hard prune the plant during winter to keep the plant bushy and compact.
Pests
Abutilons are more susceptible to the attack of white flies and mealy bugs.  The chances of pest attack can be prevented by spraying suitable pesticides occasionally  If the pest infestation on the plant is severe, it is necessary to hard prune the plants and destroy the cut stems.
Propargation
The most common method of propagation is by using semi-hardwood cuttings of the plant. 
Take a cutting of the firm stem during late spring or summer.  Make sure that you remove all the flowers and the lower leaves in the cutting.  Just leave 3-4 leaves at the top part.  Plant the cuttings in the propagating mix filled pots by making shallow holes using your finger.  Place the cutting in the hole and backfill the hole.  Water the plant after planting.  Keep the pot away from direct sunlight.  The cutting will develop roots with in about 4-6 weeks to produce new roots and then plant them in the soil.






White Chinese Lantern
Evergreen, fast growing shrub, gown for its lantern shaped flowers, which are borne prolificatly for most of the year.  Hardy in most positions but requires pruning in spring to retain shape.  There are many varieties available.
Uses:  Ideal for complementing a number osf shrubs within garden beds and borders with its mid-green leaves and lovely, delicate flowers that bob up and down in the wind like lanterns attached to a string.  
Position:  thriving in most positions.  Abutilons prefer to be grown in a semi-shade full sun position in fertile, humus-rich and well drained soil.  Prefers a semi-shaded position if kept in pots.
Care:  Keep well watered when in full growth throughout the warmer monts of the year and less at other times.  Prune hard mainly in early spring or an any other time as needed to promote bushiness and more flowers.

Purchased at Manawee 6-18-18.  Advised by Marjorie to remove Red Abution from pot, shake a little, remove this White one from pot, shake a little and re-pot into the large pot as pictured.  Twist and twine them together.
