Gardenia

Purchased July 2018, potted and located on back patio. Did well.

Needs a moist but well drained soil enriched with organic matter.  They will need plenty of light for flowering but protection from the most punishing summer sun and drying winds.  Morning sun or dappled sun all day would be appropriate.

Will drop their buds if shocked, such as drying out.  Try to keep soil moisture consistent.

Plant in tubs in Azalea and Camelia potting mix.  Gardenia like soil on the acid side.  Fertilise with Azalea and Camelia fertiliser.

Epsom salts are recommended as a remedy for yellow leaves but note that like any plant a number of nutrional deficiencies could cause yellowing of foliage.

Gardenias are prone to Sooty Mould.

Prune after flowering.  Avoid winter/spring pruning as this will result in loss of the autum initiated flower buds which normally bloom in late spring/early summer.

This was the best the gardenia looked in the time we have had it, shortly after it got white wooly aphids that I struggled to contain using home made white oil.  The plant went backward quickly when we moved all plants from the back patio, the Gardenia went either to the Dining room Garden or the Mediterranean garden, both in full sun in the middle of the day.- see care notes above.  We were unaware of this as both the label and the net info mentioned full sun...

Pic October 2020

Greg heavily pruned away all the dead wood, relocated to back of Fernery where it has started to recover.  Moved pot to Mediterranean Garden in Spring but since reading about the mid day sun we will be finding it a new home.

Crepe Myrtle - Babe (Compact) Lagerstroemia indica

Purchased from Rosemount December 2020 $20.

1.5 M H x 4' W.

Flowers all summer into Autumn, lots of sun with a little shade, suitable for larger pots, growing to 1.5M tall.

Pruning instructions on Dwarf Crepe Myrtle from Wilson Bros. Gardens, The site is full of down to earth advice on garden design, plants and care.  My downfall is pruning, am hoping this advice will help

The methods of pruning dwarf crape myrtle range from easy to not at all. For starters, the plants really don’t require pruning - they have a slower growth rate than their larger growing cousins and usually have a good natural form all on their own. That said, I usually do at least a light annual pruning on mine.

If your plants are full and dense, I'd suggest leaving them alone, or maybe just use hand pruners to snip off the old flower/seed heads from the previous season.

When To Prune

Late Winter - You'll want to prune dwarf crape myrtle shrubs in late winter or early spring, before or just when new leaves begin to emerge. That said, broken or stray branches that spoil the shape of the crape myrtle can be removed any time of year.

Summer Pruning - Deadheading (the removal of faded flowers) can be done during the flowering season to encourage rebloom from summer through fall on some varieties. Either way, it won't hurt to deadhead spent flower clusters. To remove a faded flower cluster, simply snip it off at its base with a pair of hand pruners.

How To Prune

If your dwarf crape myrtle is young and sparsely branched, with maybe just a few widely spaced stems/branches, you might want to give it a pruning to make it grow more dense. If so, use a pair of bypass hand pruners to cut these long branches back by one-quarter to half their height. Cut all stems in a way that the plant will form a nice mounded or rounded shape when the plant fills out with foliage. In other words, don't just "flat-top" it.

Keep in mind that wherever you make a cut on a branch two or more new branches will emerge from just beneath where you made the cut. So, when you're pruning the following year in late winter, you can make your cuts several inches above where you pruned the previous year. This pruning method will double the number of branches every year, which also doubles the number of blooms. After a few years of pruning like this you shouldn't have to prune at all except to remove a stray or broken branch - the plant will keep a nice, dense form all on its own.

Below are some diagrams that show how we prune the established crape myrtle shrubs in our gardens. As mentioned, we prune annually in late winter for several years in a row and then usually cease the annual pruning after that to allow the plant to grow naturally.

Plumbago auriculata, Royal Cape

Purchased from Rosemount December 2020 $12.00

Royal Cape produces large clusters of deep blue flowers from late spring to autumn.  This Plumbago variety has been bred to ensure that the flowers maintain their vibrancy throughout the summer months.  A long flowering, hardy shrub that will tolerate australias harsh conditions.  Perfect for pots, can be pruned.

Likes full sun in well drained soil.  Will tolerate dry conditions once established.  Drought tolerant.

For best results prune and fertilise with slow release fertiliser after flowering.

Grows to 2M high

Hydrangea

Purchased from Rosemount Nursery in June 2019.

Hardy, deciduous shrub with large, spectacular flower heads in summer.   Ideal for shady garden beds.

Requires moist, well drained soil in a partly shaded site, protected from hot sun and strong winds.  Prune Old stems that have flowered by 1/3rd as soon after flowering as possible.  Fertilise in spring.  Keep moist during the summer and mulch.  Water from ground level.

Great for pots

Located in Fernery, it came down with white fungus, heavily pruned & sprayed with white oil and re-located to 'nursery' area.  It has regained it's growth.

Relocated to Mediterranean garden with sun protection from Brunsfelsia, but the fungus is back. It did have one pink flower head in November, very pretty.

Boston Ferns

Purchased 2 Boston Fern ' Marcho' from Sunshine Coast Tropical Ferns and Foliage in 2019, they were reasonably expensive but have grown into large statement ferns.

The Macho Fern grows very large graceful drooping, broad fronds. These fronds can grow to over 1mtr long. Grow the Macho Fern in a shaded or partially shaded (morning and afternoon sun) spot. While it's not a delicate fern it does like some protection from strong drying winds. The Macho Fern likes moist but not wet soil, so you will need to adjust watering according to the seasons (daily in summer and less in winter). As this fern is such a statement piece give it pride of place on a beautiful stand/pedastool or hanging somewhere that it can stretch its large fronds. As the names suggests this is a large fern with deeply divided, spreading bright green fronds and a fantastic cascading fountain-like display. Ideal for hanging baskets where it can show-off its dropping habit.

Located in the Fernery between the front gate and the front door.

14th December 2020

Severe storms over the past 36 hours, with wild winds and tropical downpours, while the ferns were protected from the rain they were at the mercy of the winds, one fern, by the front door was flipped through its hanging basket arms and wound up hanging on its side, this re-aligned all the fronds to one side and the fern spent the night hanging horizontally, with the result that it will no longer hang straight, so now resting on the table to re-balance the fronds...

Purchased 2 Boston Ferns  - nephrolepis in 2019 from Rosemont Nursery $20. each to dress the courtyard.

Pic December 2020

Boston ferns are very hardy plants. They can look like they are on death’s door, and then come back to life quickly with a bit of care. This species of fern is a part of the Nephrolepis genus, popular after its discovery in 1894 within a batch of Sword ferns.

Water monthly, Do not overwater.  Test the soil with a finger, if it feels dry then water it

Lightly prune in winter to keep the plant 'tidy' as desired.

Part shade to shade

Best displayed in hanging baskets and large, decorative containers.

Liquid fertilise during the growing season.

Remove spent leaves to keep plant tidy.

Little Emerald - Tabernaemontana corymbosa

Purchased this plant from Rosemount Nursery in 2019 for $20.

It lasted just months, suddenly lost leaves and died, nothing seemed to help, further reading on care suggests perhaps it was put into too strong a sun position too soon.  It was in front of the dining room window.

Tabernaemontana corymbosa is found in China and some other adjacent countries.  This attractive shrub has glossy dark green foliage and faintly sweet scented white flowers which are produced all year round.  Best grown in a full sun to partly shaded position where it will reach 50cm.  Ideal for pots.

Didn't even get a pic, this from the net.

We went through a bit of a tough time with not only this plant dying but also a Red Ixoria purchased at the same time, put us off using the nursery for a bit.

Carex 'feather Falls'

Purchased 2 plants from Rosemount nursery August 2020 to give height and visual protection in line with Kitchen window.

Feather Falls is a highly decorative Carex with outstanding garden and pot performance.  The long clean and crisp foliage will reward you with a year round maintenance free plant.  A highlight of this new variety is its beautiful plumes of feathery flower stems that emerge from the centre of the fresh new variegated foliage during the spring months. Low maintence and easy to grow.  Suitable for Coastal environments.  Suitable for pots.

Full Sun or Part Shade.   Heat tolerant

Spread 50cm x 30cm H

Sewing Room Corner

In an effort to get some privacy over the fence I have placed one of the spare metal shelves horizontally along the back of the top shelf of the plant shelving and I keep a collection of cheap and won't break your heart if they die plants, being fish fern and cuttings from the Geranium Big Red.

On the lower shelves I put any plant that needs to be cared for for awhile, hopefully over time this will become a plant nursery for striking cuttings.

There are also a number of reclaimed ferns from 'gift pots' of assorted plants and ferns from Aldi

This beauty was purchased in October 2020 from Bunnings, it was on the $4 table but rang up as $6, it is a variety of Maiden Hair fern and will be going into the Fernery in 2021.  It was only 4" high when purchased.

Finger Lime - Microcitrus australasica 'Crystal'

Purchased this plant in April 2017 from Rosemount Nursery for $20.   Its a thorny pest, impossible to weed the base of the plant properly, it continually has a great many of those awful weeds in the pot and it apparently takes up to 7 years to fruit.....

Pic  April 2017

The exceptional pop of the Crystal vesicles gives an unbleivable extra dimension to the texture of any salad.  Crystal also serves well in desserts and other dishes.

Container plant in courtyards and on pations, feature tree in Mediterraneas gardens

Plant in Sunny position in well drained soil.

Water during the warmer months especially when fruits are forming in containers water every 3-4 days, Do not water the trunk.  Fertilise in spring and late summer-early autumn, with a fertiliser high in nitrogen, do not allow to touch the trunk.  Prune in late spring removing inside and weak growth and to shape the tree.  Crystal fruits are produced from December to March and are ready to pick when fruit nearly falls off in the hand.

Full Sun, 4-6mtr High x 2-3 M wide.

Have been told tree can be pruned to keep small and it will still fruit.  This little sucker has only grown approx 2' in the 3 years we have had it - pot too small??

This plant is going to get a major prune and re-do, possibly including being potted up and the top covered with mulch to control weeds- certainly needs it!

Flower Seedlings - Lobelia Blue

Purchased 6 pack of seedlings from Bunnings, used to plant around Lemon tree.

Compact lobelia will bloom profusely with deep blue flowers.  Easy to grow preferring a well drained soil or potting mix.  Removing spent flowers wil prolong bloom period and encourage more flowers

full sun to part shade Grows to 20cm high by 20cm wide.  Suitable for hanging baskets.

Had the lemon tree re-potted in September 2020, suspect there has been a bag mix up with a bag of garden soil being used instead of potting mix.  Soil around tree and lobelias is compacted.

Geranium Frosty Stars - Pelargonium x hortorum

In October 2020 purchased a 6 pack punnet of Geranium frosty stars seedlings, they were approx 1" tall,

Geranium frosty stars is a selection of pright picotee colours, making this one of the widest ranges of bicolours available.  Early to flower, with a good branching habit and contrasting dark zonal foliage.  The flowers have paler white centers resembling a star in the middle, which gives a two toned colour effect.  The compact hatit makes them ideal for pot plants or hangers.

Easy to grow, frosty stars in a prefers a well drained soil in a sunny position.

25cms Wide to 35cm High

Planted 3 in each hanging basket,  wasn't sure any would survive as they looked a bit ratty, this is overplanting, as they grow they will have to be potted up into their own pots.

Azalea - Rhodendendron Ericaceae

Purchased 2 Azaleas from Bunnings in Sept/October 2020@ $5 each.

Attractive evergreen shrub with vibrant flowers over a long period.

Tolerates a wide range of climates and soils. Improve poor soil with organic material.

Prune lightly after flowering to encourage dense new growth and maintain desired shape and size.  Fertilise in Spring with a complete fertiliser.

Great in large tubs

Subtropics needs a semi-sheltered position

The following info on evergreen Azaleas from Wilson Bros. Gardens.

Azaleas growing in containers will require closer attention to soil moisture. Use the finger test to check soil moisture regularly and only provide water if the top inch or two of the soil is somewhat dry to dry. During cooler months, plants will not require nearly as much water.

There is also a page full of info on care of evergreen Azaleas from Wilson Bros. Gardens, including:
Fertilize evergreen Azaleas when they start to bloom in spring with an azalea, camellia and rhododendron food or a slow-release shrub & tree food that contains sulfur and/or iron

The Azaleas had many buds on each plant but the soil was as dry as is possible to be.  Watered well but too late, most buds dropped but we go a few flowers, enough to identify plants colours.

We have a single white.

Ixora Compacta Gold

Compact evergreen shrub to 1M High with glossy green leaves which from spring to autumn bears tight clusters of waxy, gold, tubular flowers.  Can be used indoors.

Prefers a partly shaded position in humus rich, moist, well drained soil but will take full sun.

Prune lightly after flowering, Keep moist in dry weather.

Purchased from Rosemount Nursery in 2019.

Originally in Fernery by front gate, bought home with flower heads but plant did not grow.  Moved to Study Garden in full sun and immediately started new growth.

Thickening up and growing well with Torenias

Pic December 2020

Purchased an Ixora Compacta Red from Rosemount nurseries for $9 in 2019, It died soon after bringing it home, along with the Little Emerald - Tabernaemontana corymbosa.

Flower seedlings - Torenia

Purchased Torenia seedlings in 2018, planted them in the long red pot, they were lovely, all purples and white.  Read that they were easy to propagate and did so in water.

Purchased 6pack of mixed colour seedlings from Bunnings in October 2020,  hopefully I will propagate from these and keep them going in the garden, they are a lovely filler and splash of colour.

Flower seedlings - Zinnia and Marigolds

Planted 6pack of Marigolds into largeest pot for immediate colour.

Planted 6pack of Zinnias from Bunnings in long red pot 2019.  Very pretty and vibrant, replaced with Marigolds in 2020.

 Pic October 2020

The Marigolds did not do well, pulled them out to find that they had a root fungus. Self sown seedlings were appearing so left pot unplanted with a view to removing all the soil, replacing and re-potting.  Seedlings appearing turned out to be Zinnias from previous year, but life for them is a struggle, not sure if it is the fungus in the soil or the fact that they are self sown.

Pic December 2020

The Marigolds were rather expensive as they were 'pots of colour' at $2 each.
